As a Professor…
Since 2001 I have been teaching full-time in the Communication Studies program at IU South Bend. In addition, I am a doctoral candidate in Technical Communication & Rhetoric at Texas Tech University. I hold an M.A. in Communication from Ball State University and a B.A. in Communication from Aquinas College.
As Senior Lecturer, I run the area and I teach courses in Visual Communication, Cyberculture, Comics, Deception, Rhetoric, and Public Relations. Naturally, images are at the heart of what I teach in one way or another. Check out my IUSB faculty page.
My life before 2001 entailed working in the public relations department of Playing Mantis, Inc. (now owned by a different company). Playing Mantis was a national toy manufacturer that specialized in producing Johnny Lightning die-cast collectible cars, Polar Lights plastic model kits, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer memorabilia. I worked with all things digital for the company, from images to text to the website.
As a Photographer…
I am an avid photographer that enjoys life behind the lens. I first picked up an Olympus OM-10 35mm SLR in 1996 before heading off to graduate school at Ball State University to work on my Masters. Since then I have managed to upgrade from Olympus to Canon, film to digital, and collecting more experience in photographing nature scenes and the like. Currently I shoot with a Canon 7D and a variety of lenses, including:
- 70-200 EF L-series f/4
- 50mm 1.8
- 17-85 EFS series f/4-5.6 IS USM
- Lensbaby Muse
I am an avid Facebook junkie, Twitter-holic, and growing Pinterest fan. Apart from doing research on digital culture, I believe digital media is a fascinating and useful tool to help teach today’s digital natives. I also think that if done with forethought, it can be a tool that augments our personal and professional lives. Feel free to follow me on any of the social media platforms.
So there you have it, a little bit about me. Not a lot, just a little. A crumb. A morsel.
